What got you to here, is unlikely to get you to where you want to go next.
Sep 09, 2021The surprising truth about the mastery of life.
Everyone loves a success story. The child that casts aside their oppressive past to emerge victorious in the face of adversity. It's inspiring no doubt, but did you know about the fall?
What’s the fall?
Well, just when our hero appears to have achieved the success they so longed for and arguably deserve - the point at which the movie typically ends - everything is lost. That’s right, sadly, that’s how the real-life story really ends for most people.
Why is that?
Well, the answer lies in one of life’s true paradox. The idea that what got you here, will not be sufficient to get you to where you need to go. But don't despair - all is not lost. You can avoid the fall once you know how! But you will need to change and, as annoying as that might be, especially given all the hard work you’ve already had to put in to get to where you are, there’s no escaping it.
The good news is that you are up to the challenge. What you have already achieved is proof of that; but to move forward you will need to admit that there is still much to learn.
Let me explain!
Once, upon a time, in a far-off kingdom, there was a wise Zen master. People from far and near would seek his counsel and ask for his wisdom. He seldom turned them away. One day an important and successful man came to visit the master. “I have come today to ask you to teach me about Zen and open my mind to enlightenment.”
The Zen master smiled and said he welcomed the opportunity to discuss the matter over a cup of tea.
The successful man then proceeded to tell the Zen master all he knew about life, his views on this and his views on that. All hard-fought wisdom that had led to his ultimate success.
As he spoke the master poured his visitor a cup of tea. He poured slowly, but he poured continuously until the tea had risen to the rim and began to spill over the table and finally onto the robes of the wealthy man. Yet, unphased the Zen master kept pouring.
Finally, the successful man shouted, “Enough. You are spilling the tea all over. Can’t you see the cup is full?”
The master stopped pouring and smiled at his guest. “You are like this teacup, so full that nothing more can be added. Come back to me when your cup is empty. Come back to me with an empty mind.”
You need to let go of what you are, to become what you might be. Let go of what you ask? What is it you need to let go of to move forward – and avoid the fall?
Well, from my experience the change will normally need to occur in one of four areas. Either your beliefs, your behaviours, your skills, or your actions.
You may for instance have a believe that you can never rely on anyone else in this world and ultimately the only person you can truly trust is you. A belief reinforced by your abandonment as a child. It’s not wrong, it’s just no longer useful. Reaching the next level of success will require teamwork and collaboration. You will therefore need to learn a new belief - trust in others. i.e., What go you to here, will not get you to where you want to go now!
So, be very clear on what type of person you need to be, and the type of things you need to do now, to move forward. Understand the gap between that and your current reality and be prepared to close that gap, even if it means giving up what you already have. Be prepared to let go of what you are and have already become. The results are likely to be extraordinary.
