There Are Only Five Things That Really Matter!

Sep 09, 2021

Life is much simpler than most people realise.

I wanted to begin this week if I could by asking you a very important question.

What is truly essential in life?

When I ask groups of young adults this question, I typically get a myriad of responses.

Love, Money, Your health …  Your car, buying a house, your job, people’s opinions, the cost of petrol …

And on and on it goes….

Bills to pay, terrorism, global warming, inequality, loneliness, not enough time, politics, the share markets, illness, weight loss, crime, safety, bad bosses, lack of opportunity, war, difficult children, lack of sleep, lack of friends, annoying partner, unappreciative companies, unemployment, recession, pandemics, the rate of change, technology…

I could easily keep going but I won’t – why? Well because it’s exhausting and becomes a little tiresome.

And that’s exactly my point. Thank goodness our thoughts don’t appear as bubbles over our heads in the real world, or we would all be committed.

We are clearly weighing ourselves down with a host of potentially unnecessary concerns. Please don’t make the mistake of focusing on the wrong things in life. Life is much simpler than you think.

That’s one thing my work with numerous young adults over the past decade has taught me – far too many of you see life as this mass of confusing, conflicting demands. Yet, there are only a few things that really matter, and you can be highly successful in each – I have no doubt about that – once you know how.

What are those few things? Well, they are as follows…

  • First, To love and be loved, for it is truly love that makes the world go around. It is first and foremost through love and in love that we will find the extraordinary life we seek.
  • Second, To do your Great Work. Deliver a unique and highly valued product or service that helps others to achieve their goals. Something that people would mourn the loss of if it no longer existed.
  • Third, To maintain a healthy body and mind and reconnect to the spirit.
  • Fourth, To secure your financial freedom. As most of you are fortunate enough to already be enjoying the other basic freedoms of life, the key is to have enough money to do what you need to do, when you want to do it.
  • Fifth: To enjoy the journey, because the journey is far more important than the destination.’

Contrary to what the marketers would like you to think, it will not matter what you owned or how beautiful you looked. In the end, it will only matter what you gave, who you loved and how you enriched the lives of others.

Furthermore – and this is a really liberating thought – there is no shortage of these few things. There is no scarcity. They are available in absolute abundance. While that may not be true of all things, it is true of the things you will need to make your remarkable life a reality. The exciting thing about that, of course, is the realization you can have all these things in your life – you can have it all so to speak - without impacting negatively upon the greater good.

In fact, the opposite is true. If you follow the approach we recommend, you will not only create a remarkable life for yourself but in the process, you will help to save the planet and all those living on it.

How’s that for an outcome? Who could ask for more?’
